Resident Assistant

Resident Assistants (RAs) are students who serve in the residence halls as a resource for their residents. The main function of an RA is to build community and relationships with residents through programming, individualized support, campus resource information, and academic encouragement. RAs are available to provide general information, support, and make appropriate referrals as needed. There are six primary areas of responsibility:

  • Facilitate the Development of Community
  • Develop Individual Relationships with Residents
  • Promote Safe, Respectful, and Academically Conducive Environments
  • Foster Intentional Learning and Development of Residents
  • Be a Productive Member of the Staff Team
  • Develop and Demonstrate Positive and Ethical Leadership and Professional Skills

Through these responsibilities, RAs are expected to uphold the goals and mission of the Well-Being Roadmap through wellness dimension programing, and wellness interactions with each of their residents.

Resident Assistant Fall 2025 - Spring 2026 Selection Process

1. Interest Sessions: Interest sessions will be held October 16 through November 16 to provide information about the RA role, the selection process, and what it’s like to be an RA! Attendees will meet with current RAs and Hall Directors for a Q&A style presentation.

Attendance at one interest session is MANDATORY to be considered for the 2025-2026 RA position. Please do not attend more than one interest session, as space is limited. Finally, please make sure to bring your BuzzCard to your interest session, as it will be used to count your attendance.

If you are unable to attend an interest session due to extenuating circumstances, reach out to staffselection@housing.gatech.edu.

2. Application: Applications will be available online at MyHousing beginning November 1, 2024 at 8:00 a.m. EST. Applications will be open until 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2024. By applying you are authorizing the department to do a grade and conduct check with Georgia Tech through Banner and the Office of Student Integrity. Applications are located under the employment tab once you log in to My Housing.

3. Interview: After submission of a completed application, we will review your grades and conduct status as well as score your application. Successful candidates will be invited to participate in a 30-minute individual interview. Interview sign-up information will be emailed to successful candidates on January 14, 2025, by end of business, 5:00 p.m. EST.

4. Candidate Offers: Selected candidates will be able to view their offers on February 19, 2025, by 2:00 p.m. EST. Candidates will receive one of three offers: a primary placement offer, an alternate offer, or a no offer. Students that receive the primary position offer will not learn of their community placement and their room/apartment assignment until later in the semester. Specific placement information will be communicated to candidates who accept the position. Candidates must accept or decline their offers by 4:00 p.m. EST on Feb. 24, 2025.

 

 

Students Currently in our Alternate Pool

If you received an alternate offer for the 2024-2025 term, you are eligible to be hired during the Spring 2025 term, as alternates may be hired until March 2025. Students hired from the 2024-2025 alternate pool will hold the RA position until May 2025.

If you are interested in serving as an RA for the 2025-2026 term, you must apply again.

 

Students Abroad or Co-oping

Students abroad or co-oping out of town during the Fall 2024 and/or Spring 2025 term can apply for the 2025-2026 term. Please note that students selected for the RA position must be available to work on Georgia Tech’s campus both the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters.

RA Selection Process: Applications and Qualifications
When should I apply for Housing?

If you intend to live on campus regardless of the RA offer, you should apply as soon as you are eligible to apply for housing.

I am currently an RA. Do I need to apply again?

Yes, the RA role is a one-year position. Anyone interested in serving again must apply, interview, and be re-hired as an RA.

Are you hiring for the spring semester?

Candidates for the spring semester were identified through our last selection process. We are currently not seeking applications for the spring semester.

How many credit hours do I have to enroll in to be an RA?

RAs must be full-time, degree-seeking Georgia Tech students. Undergraduates must enroll in 12 credit hours and graduate students must enroll in 9 credit hours to serve as an RA for the Fall and Spring semesters. Summer RAs must be enrolled in 6 credit hours for undergraduates and 3 credit hours for graduate students for the Summer term.

Are the Interest Sessions optional?

No, interest sessions are mandatory to be considered for the 2025-2026 selection process. Candidates must attend one of the 15 interest sessions being hosted October 16 – November 16 throughout campus. Interest session dates and locations are at the top of this page.

The application won't load my essay answer. What do I do?

The essay field is big enough for 1500 characters. Please be sure to avoid contractions, bullets, or special symbols as those do not export properly into our scoring applications. Simply copying your answers to the notepad can help the cut/paste be cleaner.

How do I know my application was submitted correctly?

After you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email.

When will grades and conduct be checked?

Grades and conduct are checked after the application closes in December, before offers are made in February, and at the end of each academic semester. If you are eliminated from the process due to grades or conduct, you will receive an email from staff selection.

Co-ops, Internships, and Other Employment
Can I work a second job while I am an RA?

With Hall Director approval, undergraduate RAs can work up to 8 hours in another on-campus position. Graduate students are not authorized to hold both the RA position and other on-campus employment simultaneously.

I am a graduate student who has a GRA or GTA. Can I be an RA?

No, due to the pay structure of graduate student positions, graduate students are unable to serve as RAs and hold other positions on campus simultaneously.

Can I co-op or intern off-campus and be an RA?

Yes, if the internship or co-op is through an off-campus employer and the co-op is within 25 miles of campus.

Can I co-op at GTRI and be an RA?

GTRI is considered an on-campus employer and has a 40 hour per week commitment; therefore, students are unable to participate in both GTRI and serve as an RA simultaneously.

Reasons to Consider Canceling Your Application
I have changed my mind and no longer want to be an RA.

Please log back into My Housing and cancel your application as soon as you have changed your mind. This will remove you from our applicant list so that you will no longer receive email updates and communication.

My GPA has fallen below the 2.5 threshold. What should I do?

Please log back into My Housing and cancel your application. Please note this will not impact future application cycles.

My institute status has changed.

If you are no longer in good standing academically, financially, or for conduct reasons, please log back into My Housing and cancel your application in the system.

I cannot attend Fall training. Can I still apply to be an RA?

No. If you cannot attend Fall training, then you should not apply. Training is mandatory for all RAs.

I received a great out-of-town internship offer for Fall or Spring that I just can't turn down. What should I do?

Please log back into My Housing and cancel your application. You must be available for both the Fall and Spring term to be considered for the RA position.

Offers
Can I choose what building I work in?

No, we build teams based on skill sets and community needs. You will receive one offer. If you decline, you are no longer eligible for other offers, including the alternate offer.

What if I forgot to respond?

Any offers that have not been accepted by the deadline will be marked as declined.

If I get an offer, can I pull in a roommate?

If you are offered a position in our apartment-style housing, you can request to pull one roommate into your apartment. That student must have already applied for housing, not be on the waitlist, and you must mutually confirm each other during the housing selection process. If you are offered a position after the room selection process is complete, you are not able to pull in a roommate.

Can I get feedback on my application or interview if not selected?

Yes. If you were not offered a position, please contact staffselection@housing.gatech.edu and we will provide feedback on our decision.

Alternates
What number am I in the alternate pool?

The alternate pool is an unranked pool.

What if I accept an alternate position and then make other plans?

You can email us at any time if you no longer what to be considered for the position. You can also decline our offer if we make you one.

When will I know if I got hired from the alternate pool?

Candidates in the 25-26 alternate pool may be hired any time between March 2025 until March 2026. If you are offered a position, you will receive an email from staffselection@housing.gatech.edu with details on the position and you will be given 3 business days to accept or decline the offer.

Married Applicants
I am married and plan to live with my spouse and/or children.

We do not consider family status in our hiring process, so you could receive an offer to work in any of our buildings, including FYE or our apartments for single students. If you are only interested in a position in family housing where you can live with your spouse, please email staffselection@housing.gatech.edu and we can add that notation to your file.

I am married but received an offer for single student housing. What should I do?

If you receive an offer for a position in our single student housing (FYE, undergraduate apartments, GLC, TAH single split housing) and plan to live with your spouse you should turn down our offer and email us at staffselection@housing.gatech.edu and we can put you into the pool for the limited family housing spaces.

Summer RA Process
How do I apply to be an RA for Summer?

Only current RAs or students that have received an offer for Fall can apply to work during the summer term. If you are eligible, you will receive an email in March from staffselection@housing.gatech.edu with details on how to apply for summer.

How many credits do I need to take in summer to be eligible to work as an RA?

In summer, undergraduates must register for a minimum of 6 credits. Graduate students must register for at least 3 credits in the summer.

When does the summer hiring process take place?

The summer RA selection process takes place in March and April. Application links will be sent to all eligible candidates in March, and offers are made in April.

How many summer positions are there?

There are 45-65 summer RA positions.

Is the summer compensation the same?

No. While the rent exemptions and stipend are the same, the meal plan offered to RAs in the summer is a $500.00 dining dollar plan and any money not spent during the summer is refunded to the department.

Operation Support Managers

Georgia Tech Housing and Residence Life is seeking qualified students to support the logistic deployment for all of Housing and Residence Life’s operations. The multi-functional team serves in an adaptive, capacity-building role within the larger department, providing service support and quality assurance for a wide variety of programs including our electronic lock conversion project and resident services content creation. Team members will have the opportunity to develop critical skills and competencies in maintenance and repair work, large-scale event logistics, customer service, and how Housing and Residence Life functions behind the scenes.

Job Duties

  • Plan and execute assigned projects, establish milestones and project parameters, and set procedures to accomplish unit objectives. This could include responding to project requests, generating tasks, and assessing effectiveness.
  • Effectively pilot projects; which might include assigning tasks, peer accountability, and leading small teams
  • Engage in creative problem solving
  • Provide service support to residence life operations

Office Student Assistant

Area Office Student Assistants are Georgia Tech students who assist in the daily operations of the Community Housing Offices. Student Assistants are supervised by the Office Managers, who provide guidance and direction on daily tasks that support the housing community. Student Assistants will also work to assist Hall Directors, Assistant Directors, or other Professional Staff in Housing and Residence Life.

Job Duties

  • Provide customer service to students, staff, campus partners, and contractors
  • Issue keys to residents and staff, key audits, key racking
  • Assist students with Lockouts/key issues
  • Clerical duties as assigned
  • Assist with move-in/out
