As the first new traditional-style residence hall built on Georgia Tech’s campus in over 60 years, Bud and Val Peterson Residence Hall reflects the institute’s continued investment in the student residential experience. Georgia Tech partnered with New York-based architecture firm Nelson Byrd Woltz (NBW) and the architectural design team to bring this vision to life for future generations of Yellow Jackets. Standing eight stories tall and spanning 191,000 square feet, the residence hall houses 862 first-year students in double-occupancy rooms designed to support community and belonging.
Designed to foster community and connection, Peterson Hall features a large communal kitchen that anchors the Bud and Val Towers. Residents have access to a variety of amenities, including a multipurpose room, Peterson Market (Georgia Tech’s first 24-hour automated market), e-sports spaces, laundry facilities, bike storage, and a fitness room, providing convenient spaces to live, learn, and unwind.
The Peterson Residence Hall was designed with both sustainability and student well-being in mind. Natural light, outdoor gathering spaces, and connections to surrounding greenspaces create an environment that helps students feel connected to both campus and nature. The building incorporates biophilic design principles that support wellness, comfort, and everyday student life.
Named in honor of G. P. “Bud” and Val Peterson, the residence hall celebrates two individuals whose leadership and dedication helped shape the Georgia Tech community. Bud Peterson currently serves as President Emeritus and Regents Professor in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. As Georgia Tech’s 11th president, serving from 2009 to 2019, he helped expand the Institute’s global reach, advance campus growth, and strengthen the student experience. Throughout his tenure, Val Peterson was a passionate advocate for students, faculty, and the Georgia Tech community, championing initiatives that fostered connection, engagement, and student success.
